5 Ways Law Enforcement Officers Can Enhance Their Situational Awareness Mindset

Situational awareness is one of the most important things a law enforcement officer can have. They need to be sharp, and aware of their surroundings. Otherwise, they risk putting themselves and others in danger. Good cops are always making sure that they have an eye on their surroundings. They also look for ways to improve their situational awareness.

1) Looking Straight Ahead

It sounds simple, but looking straight ahead is one of the most effective ways to maintain a positive situational awareness. Looking straight ahead allows you to have a full field of vision, using yourperipherals to assess any movement beside you.

The important thing is to remember to keep your neck straight when you look ahead. Don’t look down or to the sides. You will break your line of vision, which can be disorienting for a moment. When on duty, LEOs need to stay as sharp and aware as possible.

2) Assess Your Mental Sharpness To Avoid Distractions

Cooper’s Color Code is a great concept to consider when assessing your mental sharpness. This theory suggests that there are four main stages to one’s awareness. The white stage is a state of relaxation. According to Cooper, when disaster strikes and you are in this stage, you will be unprepared. The next stage is the yellow stage, which is an ideal state of relaxed awareness. You’re not on edge, but you’re still aware of your surroundings. Orange is a state of anxiousness, and red is in the middle of an issue. These colors can help you train your awareness so you can be at the right state in the right time.

3) Be Aware Of Your Habits

Small habits that seem harmless can impact your situational awareness greatly. As a law enforcement officer, you know that you shouldn't check your phone while driving. Despite this, many people will briefly check their phones whenstopped at a red light. It’s small, seemingly harmless actions like this that can have a great impact on your situational awareness and lead to disaster if you’re not careful. Make sure to always be aware of your habits.

4) Use Gadgets Or Technology If Necessary

There are plenty of gadgets and pieces of technology that can help you improve your situational awareness. Having security cameras in your home can help keep you on your toes, giving you the ability to monitor your surroundings in a more comprehensive way. There are also gadgets for your truck, likeparking sensors, that can help you keep an eye on your surroundings and stay alert.

5) Play Video Games

Believe it or not, video games can offer you a great opportunity to improve your situational awareness and overall alertness. Video games provide you with the chance to improve these abilities by forcing you to constantly check your surroundings and improving your reaction time. Many people think that video games are a form of entertainment and that they’re bad for you, but this is simply not true.

These 5 things can each help you improve your situational awareness and overall alertness. It’s important for law enforcement officers to do this, so that they can provide the best possible service to society, and stay safe in the process.

Never leave your self at a disadvantage.
Keep people to your left while talking to them .

If the people whom complain about LEO’s crossing the line would simply realize the fact that, if the person doesn’t want to be treated like an idiot, don’t act the part, and comply to the officers command in ONE of the first ten times the officer will repeat themselves for said idiot . . .

Quite sincerely, Mr. M. D. Schulmeister
